Víctor Jiménez Díaz is a premier Spanish male contralto and transversal artist with a 26-year international career. Formed through living genealogies that unite the Beethovenian heritage, Mediterranean bel canto, and new creation, his practice is rooted in a Catalan identity with Andalusian, Romani, and Castilian foundations. As an openly LGBT artist, his life and work form an indivisible ethical and aesthetic unity dedicated to the “transmutation of heritage”: transforming the rigid structures of the canon from within to restore memory, representation, and human truth to the world.

The voice

Neither a falsettist, nor just another countertenor.

A functional historical contralto with real chest register, full operatic and symphonic projection and a range spanning F2 to C6. Neither a falsettist nor just another countertenor — a voice in which chest register, centre and upper extension form a single architectural continuum, giving every role its original weight, colour and dramatic authority.

A specialist in Historically Informed Performance across the complete contralto repertoire — not only Baroque, but the full arc from the 15th to the 21st century. His interpretations are grounded in direct musicological research: original ornamentation, reconstructed cadenzas and a philological reading of the score that critics have consistently described as rigorous, nuanced and dramatically alive.

He stands as a unique technical solution for institutions requiring the authentic weight and authority of the historical male contralto —bridging the gap between philological rigor and the symphonic demands of large-format opera houses.

"The natural heir to Marilyn Horne."

“The power of Jiménez’s voice does not go unnoticed at all, and his expressiveness even less.”

“From the first piece [...] the voice spread forcefully through the hall, to the point that in the moments of greatest explosion the sound seemed to take the form of a ray of light, of golden shimmering, of a flame of gold, and rose up, up, toward the angels of the vaults of the chapel.”

Couperin: Leçons de Ténèbres

HR Recordings · 2027 · With countertenor Miguel Ulla & Aurea Vox ensemble

A return to the studio after seven years — and the beginning of a new discographic chapter. Víctor joins countertenor Miguel Ulla and Aurea Vox — N. Martínez and J. Benejam (theorbos), L. Espinet (viola da gamba) and À. Villagrasa (organ) — for this intimate HR Recordings release of Couperin's Leçons de Ténèbres. Guided by the legendary Gerard Lesne in their preparation and reading of the work, the two singers bring the same high musicological rigour to both voice and instrumentation, in a shared exploration built on mutual admiration and years of following each other's careers — a long-awaited encounter between two artists devoted to the French musical heritage they love. Chamber music at its most personal.

Martín y Soler — New Solo Album

HR Recordings · 2027 · Voice & period guitar

A return to the studio after seven years — and the beginning of a new discographic chapter. Since his 2019 debut album, Víctor Jiménez Díaz has built a parallel career as a specialist in the recovery of 18th-century repertoire: transcriber, producer, editor and musicologist, composer of variations and cadenzas, and HIP performance coach for singers, orchestras and leading labels — work he continues today in association with musicologists worldwide and the Oasis Operatica initiative. He now returns to the recording studio with a suitcase full of projects. This is the first.

Joined by historical guitarist Ksenia Axelroud, performing on a replica of an original Martín y Soler-era instrument, this new solo album explores the world of the Spanish composer Vicente Martín y Soler — one of the most important and influential musicians forgotten from 18th-century Europe. Grounded in original musicological research, the album captures the musical reality of the second half of the 18th century through music for voice and period guitar, with the historically and philologically informed approach that defines how Víctor signs his projects: a full critical reconstruction of the original manuscript corpus. With Martín y Soler as its connecting thread, the album also incorporates music by composers of the same era from its great cultural centres — some recordings being modern world premieres. Concept, research, production, direction and voice by Víctor Jiménez Díaz.
